Heavy Metal Magazine, the world’s foremost illustrated science fiction and fantasy magazine, is launching an NFT Collection on Crypto.com NFT. Thanks to its daring writers and illustrators, the magazine revolutionized comics in the 1970s. Now, it’s ready to level up its digital game thanks to the rise of Web 3.0 and NFTs!
To date, Heavy Metal has generated over $600,000 in initial sales on Crypto.com— making it one of the platform’s top six creators. So fans are already looking forward to the “Writing With the Legends” drop on February 4!
Heavy Metal Magazine’s “Writing With the Legends” NFT Collection
“Writing With the Legends” will allow NFT holders to participate in creating original stories and IP. The Collection features medallion animations that grant access on specific dates to one of five corresponding private channels on Heavy Metal’s Discord server. Once in, they will be able to collaborate with the Heavy Metal writing team and create a story.
Two of the five stories will be shorts based on the iconic lore of Heavy Metal’s flagship heroine Taarna and Cold Dead War. Meanwhile, the other three will become entirely original standalone graphic novels in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres, respectively. The iconic magazine will publish all the stories, a dream come true for every writer!
Furthermore, the magazine will recognize and credit all collaborators upon request. They will also register the stories in the public domain — allowing collectors to use them, excluding canon from Heavy Metal’s intellectual property, in future creations. This perfectly demonstrates how NFTs can be a vehicle to create open ownership.
The collaborative effort will include polls and suggestions from the community, with Heavy Metal writers drafting content for its approval. Collectors will also help determine the artists for each project. Once the five stories are complete, the community will vote on their favorite original characters from each (excluding heavy metal characters). Then, the team will turn the five winning characters into a profile picture (PFP) project. NFTs will be airdropped to each corresponding medallion holder at the time of the drop.
In addition, each individual PFP token will grant 100% of its commercial rights to the holder. This will give them the right to use the character and its public domain story however they choose. So token holders would be able to release derivative works anchored on the IP and branding of Heavy Metal Magazine.
The partners are bullish that this is the future of collaborative storytelling.
“I don’t think anything like this has ever been done in the NFT space,” said Crypto.com Executive Vice President and Global Head of NFT Joe Conyers III. “Heavy Metal consistently brings revolutionary ideas to the table — it’s who they are — and I’m genuinely excited to see what the community comes up with creatively.”
The “Writing With the Legends” drop follows several others by the countercultural comic book publisher on the Crypto.com NFT platform. Follow them on Twitter for the latest updates!
