Ubisoft first announced plans for an NFT platform in December last year. Ubisoft Quartz will integrate NFTS into their games and community.
However, several employees raised concerns about the move. In fact, the company held an internal meeting to address concerns about the NFT venture. Now, the company is handing out NFTs to their staff.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Ghost Recon game franchise, Ubisoft is rewarding its staff with a Ghost Recon 20th anniversary cap NFT.
The company announced it would use Tezos for its NFT plans. The reason behind this is to use the energy-efficient, eco-friendly blockchain to alleviate staff concerns and operate in an eco-efficient manner.
However, it hasn’t gone entirely to plan, as Ubisoft’s NFT partner, Frontier, started selling tokens on OpenSea using Ethereum.
In a statement, the company reiterated its commitment to Tezos. It said, “Part of our role as a key investor is to provide them with counsel and guidance on the most eco-friendly and efficient technology choices”. It is unclear if they will continue to do so in the future.
Finally, there is clearly a long way to go in convincing people about the great uses of NFTs. In fact, last week, Team17, the creators of the popular games franchise ‘Worms’, cancelled their NFT plans after community backlash.
It will be interesting to see how this scepticism of NFTs plays out in the game industry. The key data suggests that 2022 will be a massive market for NFT games. Hopefully, Ubisoft will continue to plough ahead with their NFT plans.
